Rep. Roy's statement after voting against H.Res. 730

Statement

WASHINGTON-- On Thursday, Rep. Chip Roy (TX-21) issued the following statement after voting against a resolution recommending that the House of Representatives find Stephen K. Bannon in contempt of Congress for refusal to comply with a subpoena issued by the January 6th select committee:

This subpoena effort, just like the committee behind it, is a desperate attempt to distract the public from the massive border crisis, disarray in the Democrat party over reconciliation, and every other crisis the American people are facing as a result of failed Democrat policies.

I opposed the creation of this committee because we have more than enough existing government structures investigating the events of January 6. This committee was destined to become politicized, and it has. From the start, Speaker Pelosi chose to block certain Republicans from participating, cementing its status as a partisan farce.

Now, the committee has subpoenaed Steve Bannon, a private citizen at the time of Jan 6, without an adequate explanation for the relevance of his testimony to the events of that day. There are legitimate questions surrounding the validity of this subpoena and the validity of the overly broad subpoena authority of this committee. But instead of litigating those questions by going to court to enforce the subpoena, as the House has done in the past, partisan Democrats have rushed to a vote on criminal contempt.

I refuse to enable this petty political theater, and I certainly won't support anything constitutionally dubious in the process. The American people want Congress to secure the border, untangle the supply chain, fix the unemployment crisis, and get inflation under control; that's the work we should be doing for them right now.
